Racing Ahead: New England Adventure Racing

UPDATED July 15, 2010

Pawtuckaway Entrance Gate is only open from 8AM to 9PM.

Directions:
For those of you arriving at Pawtuckaway outside of park hours, you will need to take the left (also called State Park Road) directly before the entrance to the Park, which bypasses the gate. At that point you will need to drive toward the booth, and take a right up and into the parking lot with the visitors center. Please pay the park entrance fee at the kiosk there. You can then proceed back out past the booth and continue into the park.

See map at right for your route.

Park admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children 6-11, free for children 5 and under, & NH residents 65+ are free.

  • Orienteering maps
  • Map case
  • USARA memberships
Payment: (For teams who have not yet paid) you may pay via Active, or send a check today.  You will not be able to race without payment.  T-shirts guaranteed to teams who registered and paid within the deadline.  Remainder will be on first registered & paid - first serve.

Schedule:   3-hour team check-in will be on Saturday.
Location:  Exact location TBD              Pawtuckaway State Park (gps users: 128 Mountain Rd Nottingham, NH 03290)

Gear-check:  There will be no pre-race gear check.  There will be one or more checkpoint gear checks.

Gear:
Canoe - Kayak Paddles are allowed. If borrowing pfd’s & paddles, they can be picked up when you pick up the canoe.    Wrist watches are mandatory - 1 per team

Mtb - You probably won’t want slicks on your mtb.

General - You will not have to carry leg specific items beyond that leg (i.e. won’t need to carry paddles if not on paddling leg). You’ll stage your gear prior to race start for each leg at the single Transition Area. Caution: there may be running during a bike or paddle leg.

Orienteering maps: We will be using orienteering maps as well as topographic maps for this race.  Learn what all those colors and symbols mean.
Click here for a fun way to learn Orienteering Map features and another link to a page that explains orienteering maps and their legends.

USARA Membership:   All team members must be members of USARA.  You may purchase a single day event for $8 from us at check-in.  We highly recommend getting yearly memberships on-line at usara.com (your membership will go through faster)  If you already have a membership, remember to bring your card or number!

Map Cases:
We've noticed many maps not making it through our races.  A good map case is LOKSAK. Using a double Ziploc bag system can work but not as well.
Also, think about how you will read a map while paddling and biking.
"look ma, no hands!"
